CURRENT RIVER FLOW UPDATE
Latest Update: 14/05/2026
The annual Larval Trigger study and peak spring runoff releases have concluded. Flows have stabilized at a fishing-friendly 1,100 CFS. The river has transitioned from 'Big Water' back to ideal wading conditions throughout the A-Section. Trout are moving out of the deep back-eddies and into the primary seams and riffles.
HISTORICAL RIVER FLOW
RIVER INFORMATION
The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is a world-class tailwater known for its stunning red canyon walls and prolific hatches. With the recent drop in volume, the 'soft water' strategy has shifted. While moss lines and edges remain productive, fish are now actively feeding in the mid-river seams and riffles. The strategy has shifted from survival-mode back to technical nymphing and scanning for rising fish in the slower glides.
SEASONAL CONDITIONS: LATE SPRING
Late spring on the Green is defined by the Bureau of Reclamation's release schedule. Late spring conditions are peaking. As water temperatures hold in the mid-40s, bug activity is high. Look for Blue-Winged Olives (BWO) and Midges to dominate the surface activity, especially on overcast afternoons. The drop in flow has also made the 'Mother’s Day' Caddis emergence much more predictable in the lower A-Section.
RIVER ACCESS
The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is divided into three primary sections (A, B, and C). The most famous and heavily fished is the A-Section, a 7-mile stretch of stunning red-walled canyon beginning at the Flaming Gorge Dam and ending at Little Hole.
Public Access Points:
-
Flaming Gorge Dam (The Spillway): Located just below the dam in Dutch John, this is the primary launch point for drift boats and rafts.
-
Little Hole: Located 7 miles downstream, this area offers extensive boardwalks and well-maintained trails for wade anglers. It serves as the primary take-out for A-Section floats.
Wading & Flow Advisory: At the current stabilized flow of 1,100 CFS, wading is excellent. Most traditional spots at the Spillway and Little Hole are now accessible. The Little Hole boardwalk remains a great starting point, but wade anglers can now safely cross to island seams and mid-river gravel bars that were submerged last week.
