2026 Green River Fly Fishing Reports
Scroll Down for most current report
January 10th, 2026
The flows on the Green River are currently averaging 850cfs and stable. The streamer action on the Green River has been pretty good on all 3 river sections. Retrieve your streamers slowly and cover lots of water to get the most action. When the high pressure sets in the fishing tends to be best. Warm, calm days will provide the best shots for dry fly action - if you find trout rising stay there, as you may not find other fish looking up. The midge hatch has been mild. For nymph fishing, focus on the middle and tail-outs of runs at about 9 feet deep. For Nymphing use a small streamer or an orange scud with a tiny midge above.
Current snow pack for the Green River is at about 133% of normal in the upper Green River Drainage and 106% of normal in the lower valley. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is at about 84% capacity.

Low water till late May
A Section: The lower half of A has been pretty consistent with streamers. The Midge hatch begins in the mornings around 10am. On calm days there are pods of trout up on these tiny bugs. The fish are holding in their winter runs, nymph rigs around 9 feet deep have been best. The strikes are very subtle, so swing on any movement.
B Section: Nymph rigs and streamers have been the most effective method on the B Section. Commit to streamers on lower B.
C Section: The action has been decent on streamers. Fish dark flies on dark days and tan, ginger or white on bright days. Dry fly action is little to none.

We will likely see medium river flows for much of the season to put a band aid on power generation at Lake Powell. Our guess is flows around 1,600 cfs starting in early May. This is great news for the short term fishing outlook. We really need some serious snow in the Western U.S. for the longterm outlook !

The flows on the Green River are still averaging 850cfs and stable. The streamer action on the Green River has been pretty good on all 3 river sections. Retrieve your streamers slowly and cover lots of water to get the most action. When the high pressure weather sets in the fishing tends to be best. The BWO hatch should start appearing sporadically soon. The early bugs are usually size 14-16 and the trout will focus on them.
Current snow pack for the Green River is at about 97% of normal in the upper Green River Drainage and 85% of normal in the lower valley. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is at about 82% capacity.
We will likely see ideal river flows for much of the season to put a band aid on power generation at Lake Powell. Our guess is flows around 1,600 cfs starting in early May. This is great news for the short term fishing outlook. We really need some serious snow in the Western U.S. for the longterm outlook !

This record warm weather has brought out some terrestrial bugs - dry dropper rigs are producing some nice fish! There are also good midge hatches and some BWO's appearing as well. The BWO hatch will likely peak earlier than normal this year, as will most of our regular hatches.
The flows on the Green River are still averaging 850cfs and stable. Current snow pack for the Green River is at about 81% of normal in the upper Green River Drainage and 62% of normal in the lower valley. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is at about 82% capacity. The longterm weather forecast is calling for rain in early April - hopefully we get some substantial moisture!
We will likely see ideal river flows for much of the season to put a band aid on power generation at Lake Powell. Our guess is flows around 1,600 cfs starting in early May. This is great news for the short term fishing outlook. We really need some serious snow in the Western U.S. for a healthy longterm outlook !

A Section: The Midge hatch begins in the mornings around 10am. On calm days there are pods of trout up on these tiny bugs. A few BWO's will show up later in the day with bug numbers starting to increase. Don't be afraid to throw ants, beetles, crickets or cicadas.
B Section: The Midge hatch begins in the mornings around 10am on upper B. A few BWO's will show up around noon with bug numbers starting to increase daily. Don't be afraid to throw ants, beetles, crickets or cicadas with a dropper.
C Section: There is some dry fly action for persistent anglers. Streamers and dry dropper rigs are producing as well. The fish tend to be spooky at low flows.
Hatches: Midges, Some BWO's and Terrestrials.

The fishing on Utah's Green River has been solid as of late! The BWO hatch is starting to take flight. The nymph fishing is about as good as it gets. Sunny days will bring some terrestrial opportunities with dry dropper rigs working well.
The flows on the Green River are still averaging 850cfs and stable. Current snow pack for the Green River is at about 51% of normal in the upper Green River Drainage and 31% of normal in the lower valley. Flaming Gorge Reservoir is at about 82% capacity. There is a water meeting on April 21st that will likely bring more information on the BOR's plans for the water flows. They will be sending water downstream to save Lake Powell from hitting deadpool status (no power generation). Our guess is flows around 1,600 cfs starting in early May. The first day of raised flows will be tougher fishing as the river is very mossy. The fishing should be great once the initial flush is over. These higher flows are great news for the short term fishing outlook in 2026. We really need some serious snow in the Western U.S. for a healthy longterm outlook !

C Section: There are dry fly opportunities for persistent anglers with small terrestrials. There are some BWO's but not nearly as many as there are on the upper stretches of the river. Streamers and dry dropper rigs are producing as well. The fish tend to be spooky at low flows.

Green River Flows are going to 4,600cfs on May 1st
If you go B Section, take out at Indian Crossing or Taylor Flat Bridge boat ramps.
You cannot float under Taylor Flat Bridge at 4,600cfs
Flows are Going to 8,600cfs on May 4th - May 11th
We have been inundated with phone calls, texts and emails about the flow change. We have canceled most trips on May 1st but feel confident in the fishing from May 2nd on. The river has already been raised this year so a majority of the moss and debris on the A Section has already been flushed out. The water clarity on the lower sections of the river will improve everyday and become fishable after a few days.
4,600cfs is a great flow on the Green River. We see that flow level every season and the guides know it well. The BWO hatch is prime right now, and there are cicadas and other terrestrial’s around as well. Worm patterns and scuds will also be on the trout menu.
The Bureau of Reclamation and powers that be have decided to send 1/3 of Flaming Gorge Reservoirs water downstream to put a band-aid on Lake Powell. The Green River is likely to remain at 4,600cfs for a majority of the season. This will make wade fishing tougher but the boat fishing will be solid. The flows will also go up to 8,600cfs - likley 2 times this year. The first time will be for about a week sometime likely in late May and the second high water event will be for about 3 days sometime around June 20th for the smallmouth bass experiment they have been running for about 6 years now. No one knows for sure when the 8,600cfs flows will happen and we are usually only given 3 days notice. We will post information as it becomes available. For more information about high water on the Green River check out our high water page and High and Dry video on Youtube.
The fishing so far this Spring has been amazing! It is definitely one of the best early seasons in recent memory. The upcoming high water events are going to be incredible for the health of our fishery!

Green River Flows are dropping to 1,100cfs on May 14th

The fishing is going to improve daily as the water temps go up. The river has been cleansed of moss and debris and the trout are extra fat and healthy right now. The river will go up again one more time to 4,600cfs for 3 days sometime before late June for the Smallmouth Bass Experiment . No one knows when that will occur but the river will still fish great then as the sand and moss are all flushed downstream. We are only given 3 days notice as to when this will occur.
There are cicadas, terrestrials and BWO's out and the fishing is set to be on fire ! We still have some openings - get up here if you can!
