2021 Green River Fly Fishing Reports
January 25th, 2021
The streamer fishing on the Green River has been solid on the A and B Sections. The streamer action on the C Section has been slower than normal, but will still produce for anglers that are persistent. The midge hatch has been sparse and there are a handful of BWO dries making an appearance in the early afternoons. Calm days will fish best on the dry flies. For nymph fishing focus on the middle and tailouts of runs at about 9 feet deep.
Current snow pack for the Green River is at about 77% of normal. Hopefully the incoming storms will help out these weak numbers. Pray for snow!
Green River Flow Forecast Steady Low Flows
Current Flow Level - 900 cfs
Red Creek: Clear - subject to daily change
A Section: The Midge hatch begins in the mormings around 10am. On calm days there area few pods of fish up on these tiny bugs. The trout are holding in their winter runs, nymph rigs around 9 feet deep have been best. A few BWO's can be found near Little Hole in the afternoons.
B Section: Nymph rigs have been the most effective method on the upper B Section. Streamers have been best on lower B.
C Section: The action has been slow on streamers. Fish dark flies on dark days and tan, ginger or white on bright days. Dry fly action is little to none. It is a sin to nymph on the C Section and you will receive years of bad fishing Karma for doing so.

Not much has changed since our last Green River Fly Fishing Report. We've had a few guided trips out over the past week. Veteran guides Charlie Card and JD Magee are available most days until April and are happy to put you on the fish! The streamer bite continues to be solid on the upper stretches of the Green River. Slowly swinging and retrieving streamers in the middle and tail-outs of the pools has been the most productive method. The streamer action on the C Section still hasn't turned on but persistent anglers will find fish. The midge hatch is sparse, but there are a few size #16 BWO dries showing up in the early afternoons near Little Hole. "Warm" and calm days will fish best on the dry flies. The fish are holding in their winter lies - the middle and tail-outs of runs at about 9 feet deep have been best for nymph fishing.
Fortunately, the current snow-pack for the Green River has come up and is now at about 87% of normal. There are a number of future snow storms forecasted so hopefully we can get back in the average snowpack range. There is still plenty of time to get the much needed moisture in the mountains.

The Green River is fishing well with small nymphs and streamers. There are a few BWO mayflies around but nothing to get too excited about yet - a few more weeks until they start showing up in mass. The midge hatch has been very slim this year, the low water doesn't help the hatches.
Current snow-pack for the Green River is at about 95% of normal. We are currently getting hit hard with snow which should help considerably. Red Canyon Lodge reported a foot of snow this morning!

Red Creek: Clear - subject to daily change
A Section: Slowly stripping streamers has produced well lately. You will get more chases than grabs but the action is solid. Look for Midges around 10am on calm days. A few BWO's can be found near Little Hole in the afternoons - especially on warm cloudy days.
For nymphing use small bugs - scuds and midges at about 9feet deep.
B Section: Streamers continue to fish well. On upper B small nymphs have done well in the middle and tailouts of runs.
C Section: The action has been decent on streamers. Use dark flies on dark days and tan, ginger or white on bright days. Dry flies will produce on warm sunny days. It is a sin to nymph fish on the C Section and you will receive years of bad fishing Karma for doing so.

The nymph fishing on the Green River has been very good.! Zebra Midges, Grey Soft Hackles, Black Beauty's and RS2's will all produce. The flows remain low, averaging 850cfs and will likely remain at this low level for the rest of the month. The Blue Wing Olives are out but not in mass quantities yet. Look for the hatch to take off in the next week or so. Once the BWO hatch gets going the dry fly fishing will pick up - especially on wet or cloudy days.
Current snow-pack for the Green River is at about 80% of normal. As of now, we are looking at a low water year. Hopefully we get a wet Spring!

Cutting to the chase... The cicadas have not made an appearance yet, and we do not know when high water will begin.
As soon as we hear details on the flow change we will post it on social media.
The fly fishing on the Green River is very good! Terrestrial bugs are starting to produce, despite the lack of cicadas so far. There are beetles, crickets and some size #10 hoppers on the banks. There is still hope for the smaller cicadas, but the window in which they usually appear is shrinking. The large cicadas still have a 50/50 chance of showing up later in June. The nymph fishing has been steady and solid with BWO and midge patterns. Grey Soft Hackles, Zebra Midges, WD40's, Black Beauty's and RS2's will all produce. The flows remain low, averaging 860cfs and will likely remain at this low level till the end of the month. The Blue Wing Olives are thick on cloudy or wet days.
Current snow-pack (snow water equivalent) for the Green River is at about 55% of normal. Unfortunately we are looking at a very low water year.

High water is coming at 11pm on May 22nd. The flows are set to rise to 4,600cfs on May 23rd, and then drop 350cfs per day to 860 on June 3rd.
The fly fishing on the Green River is very good! The cicadas have shown up on the A Section! Terrestrial bugs are producing nice fish. There are also beetles, crickets and some size #10 hoppers on the banks. The large cicadas still have a 50/50 chance of showing up later in June. The Green River is fishing very good! There are cicadas on the A Section and about 1/2 way down on the B Section. Size #8-10 Terrestrial bugs - Chernobyl Ants, beetles, crickets and hoppers will all produce fish. The large cicadas still have a 50/50 chance of showing up later in June.
Current snow-pack (snow water equivalent) for the Green River is at about 55% of normal. Unfortunately we are looking at a very low water year. There is a chance that the Bureau of Reclamation will raise the flows again in late June to hurt the smallmouth bass spawn downstream. Their theory is that if the hurt the bass spawn it may help the endangered species downriver. We will post info as it becomes available.

The flows on the Green River went up yesterday to 4,600cfs. The flows will recede in a few days and be back to base levels of 850cfs on June 26th. The cicada hatch is over but Caddis, Yellow Sallies, and PMD's are out in force on the B and C Sections. The hatch will move up onto the A Section soon - likely after the flows recede. Terrestrial bugs in sizes 8-10 - Chernobyl Ants, beetles, crickets and hoppers will all produce fish.
Green River Flow Forecast 4600cfs dropping back to 850cfs on June 26th then Steady Low Flows for the summer.

Caddis, Yellow Sally Stoneflies and PMD's are keeping the fish happy! The bugs are thickest on the A and B Sections. The C Section does not have great hatches right now - possibly caused by the double high flows that were done this season. The river is running steady at 850cfs. Terrestrial bugs in sizes 8-10 - Chernobyl Ants, beetles, crickets and hoppers will all produce fish as well. They just stocked the river with 12 inch rainbows at the main boat ramps - go ahead and pad your numbers !

Terrestrial dry fly and attractor season is here. Ants, beetles, hoppers and crickets will all produce. Dry dropper has also been very productive. The flows on the Green River are fluctuating daily, which has made the fishing inconsistent. Some mornings fish very well, the next day, on the same river section, the morning is tougher. When the flows come up the fishing slows down for about an hour. It typically comes up about 9am on the A Section , 11ish on B Section and 1-2 pm on the C Section. Once the flows stabilize the fishing usually picks back up. The dry fly eats are slow and cautious so waiting on the hook set is very important. There are some Tricos that come out around 10am. These tiny bugs will make the fish happy, and tend to frustrate anglers. San Juan River size bugs and light tippet are needed to fool fish on the Tricos.

Not much has changed in the past month. The nymph fishing is good with small bugs trailing an attractor pattern such as a wooly bugger or San Juan Worm. Terrestrial dry fly and attractor patterns continue to be the best surface fly options. Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, and Crickets will all produce. Dry dropper rigs have also been very productive - especially on the B Section of the river. The flows on the Green River are fluctuating daily, which has made the fishing inconsistent. These fluctuating flows, combined with some boats rowing down the banks, seem to keep many of the fish off of the banks. The bubble lines and mid river drifts have been good. When the flows come up the fishing slows down for about an hour. It typically comes up about 9am on the A Section , 11ish on B Section and 1-2 pm on the C Section. Once the flows stabilize the fishing usually picks up. The dry fly eats are slow and cautious so waiting on the hook set is very important. There are some Tricos and Psuedocloeons (tiny BWO's) that come out around 10am. These tiny bugs will make the fish happy, and tend to frustrate anglers. Tiny patterns and light tippet are needed to fool the fish that are keyed into these little bugs.

The fishing is decent on the Green River. The nymph fishing is consistent with small bugs. A lot of the guides are fishing a nymph rig with a wooly bugger as the bottom fly. Small Terrestrial dry flies will work when the weather is nice, Hoppers, Ants, Beetles, and Crickets drifted well will all produce. Dry dropper rigs will work on the B and C Sections. The flows on the Green River have dropped a little and are fluctuating daily, which has made the fishing inconsistent. The dry fly eats are cautious so pausing on the hook set is important. Streamers have been hit or miss, try mixing up retrieval speeds and changing colors.

The streamer fishing has been solid on the Green River. All 3 river sections are producing, with the B Section tending to be the most consistent. The nymph fishing is good with small bugs. A lot of the guides are fishing a nymph rig with a heavy streamer such as a Goldilox as the bottom fly, and a small fly or 2 above it - total rig length around 9 feet deep. A good percentage of the fish are in their deep winter lies. When the weather is sunny and warm try fishing Chernobyl Ants, Triple Doubles, Beetles, and Crickets. Dry dropper rigs will produce on the B and C Sections.
The flows on the Green River have dropped to base flow levels and will likely remain here until Spring. Pray for snow!
The brown trout are spawning - Please avoid anchoring, standing on or fishing the Redds!
